The CXO’s AI Reality Check, part 2: The Human-in-the-Loop – How Tech Roles are Evolving for the AI Era
By Rahul Kumar, Regional Director, Experis Europe
There is a quote from Travis Barrs that perfectly captures the current state of technology talent:
“You’re not going to be able to get the human out of the loop. I’m not going to replace you with a robot. I may, however, replace you with a person who is leveraging a bunch of bots and robots.”
The fear that AI would trigger mass IT headcount reductions is giving way to a more complex reality. Traditional tech roles are not dying − they are undergoing a massive evolution.
The data from the Experis CIO Outlook 2026 shows a clear shift. Fewer tech leaders than last year are looking to eliminate roles to cut costs. Instead, they are realising that human oversight, domain expertise and strategic thinking are more critical than ever.
More than half of tech leaders are focusing on embedding AI skills directly into existing jobs rather than starting from scratch.
To support this shift, UK organisations are bucking the global trend by ramping up talent development. 68% of IT leaders report active programmes for rising talent, up from 58% in 2025.
We can no longer hire our way out of the skills gap. We have to build the capability from within.
If you want your teams to survive this transition, three actions are essential:
Embed AI skills into current paths: Don’t treat AI as a separate department. Integrate model prompting, security verification, and data mapping into standard role descriptions.
Balance tech with strategy: Train your developers to think like architects and business partners. The value isn’t in writing the code; it’s in designing the solution.
Invest in rising leaders: Expand internal mentoring and apprenticeship programs to build leadership continuity before succession gaps widen.
At Experis, we believe that technology gets you to the pilot, but humans get you to results.
Through our Experis Academy upskilling programmes, specialised Project Services and resourcing models, we help you map the future of your workforce. We tie our delivery milestones directly to the SLA of operational adoption. Whether you need to upskill your internal teams or scale capability via our cross-border delivery hubs, we provide the talent strategies that bridge the execution gap.
Are you training your engineers to write code, or are you preparing them to govern the AI systems that write the code?
